is moderating.. he's bben through at least 20 debates in the course of the primaries, and newt gingrich himself said just he other day, he's the best debater. he beat all of them. tim pawlenty, a republiccn said &pdebatermitt romney used senator rob pprtman of ohio to act as his opponent while preparing for the debate.... of romney stand-in...for role - presidenttobama. the &ppresident has a day joo, the hhs not had the time to practicee all e hear about is that mitt romney's been practiccng, practicingg practicing wherever he goes. i think mitt romney is going to come in there very prepared, he's going to do &pvery well because he's done very well in all of the debates major reakthrough, yyu know, a comment. that doesn't happen very often. it happened witt rragan and mondale. it happeeed with reagan and &pcarter, but frankll, i can't remember the last ime there was one of these comments that because, frankly, the candidatee aae too well prepared. they're well president obama headed to as vegas for a campaign event -- while mitt romney attenddd foor hunkering down for final -----end---

newt gingrich for romney. >>> plus, insight and analysis from our roundtable. george will, austan goolsbee, nicolle wallace, gwen ifill and andrew sullivan. >>> hello again. with just nine days to go, the october surprise is here. hurricane sandy, threatening a massive stretch of the u.s. from virginia to new england. all of the way to the great lakes. it's already caused both candidates to scramble their schedules. it will complicate both candidates' efforts to get their voters to the polls. we'll get into that, plus our latest abc news/washington post poll in just a moment. but, let's begin with sam champion from lower manhattan. he's following the track of sandy right now. good morning, sam. >> good morning, george. let me show you first, the satellite picture, which will show you this storm is one of the largest that we have ever seen in the atlantic basin. the latest out from the hurricane center, it feels exactly the same way they did for several days, making a left-hand turn for the coastline by monday. we got tropical-force winds 1,000 miles across in this storm, and hurri

in a room and get a deal done. i interviewed newt gingrich. he said the way it were with president clinton, you would be in a room full of advisers, you fling them out, it's you and him, get it done, compromise, get it done. why is that not happening now and what advice do you give to barack obama to try to get into that kind of mind set with the republicans? >> well, that's -- what speaker gingrich said is true, but it's not the whole truth. we had one year when virtually nothing got done. i was a stickler for passing my budgets on time. but, in 2005, we didn't. and i had to veto what they did. and they had to do what they did because that's what they promised the voters they would do in the '94 elections. then the citizens decided they agreed with me more than them. they don't want the government shut down or take a radical departure, just bring the deficit down. so after the two governments shut down in late '95 and early '96, then we began the compromise talks everyone talks about. there's been no forcing event so far. it's what the election is. mark my words, if president obama wins t

in florida, where he was facing newt gingrich, facing mortal distinction and by being aggressive and strong and tough he was able to back gingrich down. i think they're more likely to go that direction than to go stately and formal. chris: i was thinking that have movey, "presumed innocent" where harrison ford's character is told, you have to point at that guy and say, he did it. can romney be that strong? do you think that could be coming? >> he has to take a part -- apart some of the things his campaign has been trying to say. that might appeal to those voters who have not been thrilled with the president but have not been converted to romney voters yet. you're going to hear a lot of i think a distilled theme of the country can't afford another four years of the last four years. they know that this is the biggest audience he will have had. the republican convention was important but this is much bigger. and will voters get a chance to see him without some of the care contour? the aggression -- caricature? the aggression, he's got to really sort of have a carefree sense of go for it. and n

point. take a look at this little change with newt gingrich in florida in january. >> speaker gingrich was hired by freddie mac to promote them, to influence other people throughout washington, encouraging them not to dismantle these two entities. i think that was an enormous mistake. >> so he did it with a nice tone, said newt gingrich made an enormous mistake. i think that was a good way of romney pointing out the differences. what he does, though, is when he's in moment when there's a really candid exchange and he's not sure what to say, he can really look awkward. remember this? i bet you do. >> you were for individual mandate, my friend. >> you know what, you've raised that before, rick. and you're wrong -- >> it was true then, true now. >> rick, i'll tell you what, 10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? >> that became a real problem for mitt romney because it only fed into the narrative that he doesn't care about your problems, he's rich and out of touch. if you bet $10,000, not such a good idea. >> that was a little awkward. >> it was a bad moment for him. and that happens to him when he's

on the sunday talk shows. on "meet the press" newt gingrich and robert gibbs offered their insight. >> the president of the united states had 90 minutes. now if he had done his homework, if he had actually prepared, if he had actually studied romney, why didn't he say it? why didn't he take romney head on. the charges of the tax cuts are wrong. virtually every analyst has said, even your deputy campaign manager said -- >> no, no, no. >> it's on. for getting that for a second. the job of the president is supposed to be to be competent and to be able to stand up for what he believes in and to be able to articulate what's wrong. mitt romney walked over him. >> it's not rocket science to believe that the president was disappointed in the expectations that he has for himself but, look, i think part of that was because, as i've said earlier, we met a new mitt romney. we met a mitt romney that wanted to walk away from the central theory of his economic plan, which is his tax cut. i don't have a tax cut that's 4.8 trillion or $5 trillion. i'm not going to cut taxes on the rich. i don't hav

political and economic head winds. >> newt gingrich said there were five words that would break barack obama. >> well, leave it to newt gingrich to be so wrong. this is a president who sees everybody. who sees both the folks who have emerge emerged and those who are struggling and understands that we have work to do some finish the job. he actually cares about and sees everyone and has a strategy to reach them. >> 23 mope yifrmillion american unemployed. >> today benghazi we see e-mails that the administration did know this was a terrorist attack. none of this is very good for the president, is it? >> well look, first of all, you cannot deny that there are people still out of work. you can accept and have to that a strategy that is about investing in innovation is the reason why we are getting the job growth that we are. imagine how it would be if the president got the things that he has asked for. remember the fog of war. there was an intelligence report, on sunday talkshows more information has come out. if you ever would think that this president given the seriousness with which he takes
